What are the ends of a magnet called?
The ends of a magnet are called poles, with one end called the north pole and the other the south pole. If you line up two magnets so that the south pole of one faces the north pole of the other, the magnets are drawn to each other, which is called attraction. If, on the other hand, you line the magnets up again so that two like poles face each other, the magnets will push each other away, which is called repulsion. Opposite poles therefore attract each other, whereas like poles repel. And if you split a magnet in half, each half of the original magnet will have a north and a south pole, so you end up with two magnets.
