What is meant by the term direction of magnetization?

Magnets can be magnetized across any axis, so they can be used in different ways. The direction of magnetism determines which side of the magnet is the north and south pole. This must be determined before manufacture, as an anisotropic rectangular magnet, for example, can only be magnetised in one of the three possible directions.
